Poor posture affects your body in a number of serious ways.
Some are obvious. Everyone knows about or has experienced back and neck pain, or has seen someone lose a few inches in their height due to slumping over.
What you may not know is some of the more subtle ways that poor posture can hurt you. Not all of these are even physical!
Let’s go through three of them. See if any of this sounds familiar.
IT SHIFTS YOUR INTERNAL ORGANS
You may think the inside of your body rests in a solid structure or encasing of some kind, but many of your internal organs are actually quite flexible in terms of where they rest. Think about it – your torso and abdomen move and twist all around throughout the day. Your organs will do the same, and when you in particular, when you hunch over with poor posture, you’re shoving your intestines down and out – they have to go somewhere!
This is both uncomfortable for you, you’re inhibiting proper digestion, and to be quite blunt, you’re making your stomach look a bit more…robust than it would otherwise.
POOR POSTURE AFFECTS YOUR MOOD
Prevention wrote about a recent study done at a university in Northern CA related to posture and mood.
…students were told to either walk down a hall in a slouched position or to skip. The slouchers reported increased feelings of depression and lower energy than skippers.
This is no surprise at all. Related to the first, when you’re slouched over, you’re inhibiting your full lung capactiy, i.e. you’re taking less oxygen into your body. Of course this will affect your brain functions, and thus your mood!
The mood factor also plays into our third item.
YOUR CAREER CAN BE DAMAGED BY BAD POSTURE
Everyone feels happier when they’re confident. There’s a reason one of the headlines on this website is about confidence and posture.
Better posture, leads to better confidence, leads to a more positive perception of you. This includes the your who’s walking through your workplace either standing tall or slumped over.
Who appears to be the more inspired and assured leader? Who’s putting for a subtle message of “promote me”?
I think you can figure out the answer.
These are only three of many ways that bad posture affects your body, mind, and life.
The next step – and the solution – is figuring out how to fix bad posture. One of the most effective aids in this effort is a back posture brace like Bax-U.
